I've played this. It's one of my favorite pieces, this and Candide and The Sword and the Crown. Why? Because the composer, Percy Grainger, wandered into a bunch of dockside taverns and listened to drunken sailors sing their chanties and bitters and whatnot...and then he composed music based on that. Can't you just hear the drunken sailor-ness of this? Love it.
I might also love this because it reminds me of freshman year, when I was an amazing trumpet player (before the braces), and had 40 older brothers in the trumpet section.
Each movement is pretty different from the others, and there are 5 in total. I've only posted my favorite two. There's everything from drinking songs, to love songs, to songs about the sea, you name it.
