In light of this very large '21 Days' and 'Fat Ass Friday' push around the blogosphere, I wanted to share some of my favorite tips for eating healthy.
- Avoid salt. Salt makes you feel dehydrated, and it causes your body to crave water. The trouble is, cravings for hydration are often mis-cued as hunger cravings. Therefore, we eat when we should drink a glass of water (or, at least, drink a glass of water FIRST, wait 20 minutes, and if we're still hungry THEN eat).
- Love spice. Spicy food helps you feel more full and satiated. My favorite is cayenne, which also lowers blood sugar levels. Seriously, I put cayenne on everything- scrambled eggs, baked chicken, cooked broccoli, curries. A little can go a long way, and unless you're allergic to capsicum, it's a pretty healthy spice.
- Portion control is the biggest thing. Unless it could kill you, why deny yourself the things you love eating? Indulge, but do so sparingly. Instead of a piece of cake, have one bite. Instead of fast-food fries, eat three and be done. Either throw out the rest, or give it to someone who will consume the rest right then and there (because willpower is difficult). Your meat servings should be no larger than the palm of your hand, and 1 inch thick.
- Take the rest home! When you're eating out, exercise portion control by halving all your food as soon as it arrives, and putting half into a doggy bag to take home (instant lunch the next day). You'll be less tempted to eat more than you should this way.
