Meet The Second Chance Institute (SCI): Earth’s benevolent non-profit by day, Thera’s totalitarian regime by night. Their motto: Because Everyone Deserves a Second Chance™. Reality: the SCI subjects Second Chancers to strict controls and politically motivated science experiments like Cleaving—forced lifetime union between two people who have sex. Punishment for disobeying SCI edicts? Immediate Exile or death.
Meet Kira Donovan. Fiercely loyal, overly optimistic, and ensnared by the promise of a full-ride college scholarship, Kira signs the SCI Recruit contract to escape memories of a tragedy that left her boyfriend and friends dead.
Meet Blake Sundry. Bitter about being raised in Exile and his mother’s death, Blake’s been trained to infiltrate and destroy the SCI. Current barrier to success? His Recruit partner—Miss Goody Two Shoes Kira Donovan.
Meet Ethan Darcton. Born with a defective heart and resulting inferiority complex, Ethan’s forced to do his SCI elite family’s bidding. Cleave-worthy Kira Donovan catches his eye, but the presiding powers give defect-free Blake Sundry first dibs.
is a book with an interesting concept. I like the blend of philosophy (the Second Chance Institute), political intrigue, and science fiction (Thera, which it took me half the book to realize is an anagram of Earth).
The highlights of the book are the concepts and completeness of the world. In fact, the world felt more real than the characters inhabiting it.
I felt that they were almost real, but lacking enough depth to be more than just representations of their gender/age group/community. Had they been truly analytical and thought-focused (i.e. Kira displaying emotional grief over the tragedy in the early parts of the book, trying to come to terms with the 'why' of it, having survivor's guilt, etc.) instead of repeatedly insisting that they were, I would have been less distracted from the plot.
Overall, this felt like a great first draft that, with some characterization improvements, could become fairly epic. I recommend it for YA and MG readers, especially Sci-Fi fans, that are more focused on theory and idea.

Theranberry Bread Pudding Recipe
- 1 1/2 cups theranberries or blueberries (if you're on Earth)
- 3/4 cup + 4 Tblsp sugar
- 3/4 cup water
- Roughly 11 oz bread, cut into 1" cubes (preferably slightly stale)
- 3 eggs
- 2 egg yolks
- 3/4 cups cream
- 1 cup milk
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 Tblsp ground cinnamon
- Pinch of salt
- Boil theranberries (or blueberries), 4 Tblsp sugar, and water until tickened and berries have burst.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Whisk together eggs, egg yolks, and 3/4 cups sugar.
- Whisk in the cream and milk until fully incorporated.
- Whisk in the vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt, until well combined.
- Add the bread cubes and mix gently until they are each coated in the egg mixture.
- Let bread absorb the egg mixture for 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
- Pour half of bread pudding mixture into an 8" x 8" glass pan.
- Then spread half of the berry preserves on top of bread pudding mixture.
- Pour the remaining bread pudding mixture, then top with remaining preserves.
(Yep, I messed this up by running short of theranberries. D'oh!)
- Cover with foil and use a fork to perforate, so steam can escape.
- Cook at 350 degrees for 1 hour (or until custard is no longer liquid).
- Remove and let cool slightly. Serve warm, with custard sauce, if desired.
