Tortilla DIY

My aforementioned love of bread? It applies to flatbreads, too. Tortillas are totally easy to make, inexpensive, and are somehow this impressive feat in the eyes of others.

What's not to love?

Ingredients:

  1. Toss butter chunks into flour.

  2. Using your fingers, mash it all up together until it has a sort of wet-sand consistency (well, at least until the butter is ground so finely that it doesn't feel like butter).

  3. Dissolve the salt in the water.

  4. Pour water into flour and mash with a fork until combined.

  5. Dump onto a clean surface and knead until the dough is soft.

  6. Divide the dough into 12 more-or-less equal balls of dough and let them rest on a plate (covered) for 30 minutes.

  7. Flour a clean surface and, using a rolling pin, roll each ball of dough into a 7" flat circle.

  8. Heat an ungreased pan over medium heat.

  9. Fry up each tortilla, 30-45 seconds per side, in this ungreased pan.

  10. When you remove each one, put it in a cloth napkin or clean cloth towel to keep the tortilla from drying out.

  11. Tada! Homemade tortillas!
